A little something we've been working on at Astronomic Studios.
Like a lot of you, I don't care for generative AI artwork. I also don't particularly enjoy having the artwork associated with our films brought into question.
I've had people reach out and tell me they wanted to purchase one of our movies but didn't want questionable AI-generated artwork sitting on their shelves. I get it. I really do.
Let me be clear about something. I would never greenlight AI-generated artwork or use it on our original Astronomic Studios projects. However, some of our films are distributed through various domestic and international distributors. They handle these titles in different ways, and sometimes that includes artwork created with generative AI. Some of these distributors attempt to avoid ai, and some slips by. Some of these arrangements are with companies I've never even personally spoken to. That's just part of the business, and unfortunately, I have little to no say in how certain releases are packaged and presented.
So, I came up with an alternative, Anti-AI Cover Art.
What's that mean? Well, pretty much the complete opposite of what's being produced today.
No shiny, over polished artwork. No crazy compositions, no six fingered hands, no artificial-looking movie posters trying to look like the next Hollywood blockbuster.
I went all the way back to the beginning and took inspiration from the original Magnetic Video VHS releases. Extremely basic, almost catalog-like designs. Black and white. Simple typography. One image from the actual movie, presented with that photocopied, bootleg VHS kind of aesthetic.
I wanted something that felt like anti-art. Something deliberately simple. Something that doesn't look like everything else being produced today.
I've gone through our catalog and created an alternate insert for every Astronomic Blu-ray title, each with its own catalog number. These are be available FREE to download from the this website. To get to the art go to our Movies page and look for the “Anti-AI Alt. Art” button.
ou can print all of them, print one, or print none. They're simply another option for anyone who would rather have something different from the artwork currently available, whether that's our own artwork or artwork supplied by a distributor.
Generative AI isn't something we can always eliminate from the distribution side of independent filmmaking, but we can offer alternatives.
